(Jakarta Globe) Cabinet Announcement Still Elusive but State Palace Targets Monday Inauguration

12/12/2018

The composition of Indonesia’s next cabinet under the presidency of Joko Widodo was still uncertain on Saturday after several days of media speculation and scrutiny of candidates’ financial records by Indonesia’s antigraft agency.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla told reporters on Friday that the announcement was imminent, and committed to a Monday inauguration day for the incoming batch of ministers. A leaked list of names, the authenticity of which could not be verified, included controversial figures Puan Maharani, the inexperienced daughter of former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, and former army chief Wiranto. Both were reported to have been given senior ministerial portfolios.

The former deputy of President Joko Widodo’s transition team, Andi Widjajanto, said late on Friday night that the announcement would be held on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the State Palace. If Sunday 4 p.m. were to come and go with no official announcement, it would not be the first false dawn regarding the unveiling of the cabinet.

The principal reason for the delay has been the need to wait for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to finish vetting the candidates put forward by Joko.

“You will know the names of the ministers on Sunday,” Andi said at the State Palace.

It was understood on Saturday that the KPK had delivered its final report to Joko on Friday night at around 10 p.m.

The latest comment from the presidency was that the inauguration of new ministers would go ahead on Monday at 11 a.m.
