(Jakarta Globe) Gen.Police Sutarman:Too Early to Speculate About QZ8501, Police working with kNKT to Analyze
National Police Gen. Sutarman says it’s too early speculate about the cause of the crash of Indonesia AirAsia flight QZ8501.
“We’re working with the National Committee on Transportation Safety [KNKT] in looking for the cause of the accident. We have no information whether the plane fell down directly or exploded [and then fell]. It’s too early [to say],” Sutarman said at a press conference on Wednesday.
The Airbus A320-200 was headed for Singapore from Surabaya in East Java on Sunday when it disappeared during bad weather with 162 people on board.
Sutarman said police were working the the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) to find and identify victims.
“A number of bodies have already been found,” Sutarman said. “We’ve prepared Disaster Victim Identification facilities at Pangkalan Bun [in Central Kalimantan] and Surabaya.”
The police chief said the plan was to take the remains of the victims to the East Java Police’s Bhayangkara Hospital in Surabaya.
“We hope that the bodies can be identified there and when the administrative process is completed, the bodies can be handed to the families by Basarnas,” Sutarman said.
Meanwhile, the chief of the West Kalimantan Police, Brig. Gen. Arief Sulistyanto, denied a report that victims were found alive in the area by fishermen.
“So far there are no reports of survivors,” Arief said.
