(Jakarta Globe) House to Summon Home Affairs Minister Over Basuki Inauguration

12/12/2018

Lawmakers on Wednesday announced that they intend to summon the minister of home affairs and the state secretary over a complaint filed by Jakarta city councilors claiming that the appointment of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama as Jakarta governor was unconstitutional.

“We, from Commission II of the House of Representatives [DPR] will invite the home affairs minister [Tjahjo Kumolo] and the state secretary [Pratikno] based on the recommendation from the city council [DPRD],” Ahmad Riza Patria, deputy chairman of the commission overseeing domestic affairs and regional autonomy, said on Wednesday.

Ahmad, from the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) party, said Commission II regretted the government’s “unwise” decision to inaugurate Basuki despite protests from his opponents in the DPRD.

“Searching for the best solution for Jakarta’s problems, we regret the government’s rushed and unwise decision,” Ahmad said, adding that the decision to summon the ministers was made after the lawmakers had an audience with some Jakarta councilors who are opposed to Basuki’s appointment.

Deputy speaker of the Jakarta City Council Muhammad Taufik has previously stated he would keep fighting against Basuki’s appointment, for instance by boycotting all future plenary sessions.

Taufik, like Ahmad from Gerindra, also said on Wednesday morning that none of the city councilors under the Red-White coalition (KMP), which he chairs, would attend the inauguration ceremony at the State Palace.

Basuki was inaugurated on Wednesday afternoon by President Joko Widodo.

Taufik, a corruption convict who served an 18-month sentence for embezzling funds from the Jakarta elections commission in 2004, claimed Basuki’s endorsement was invalid because none of the council’s four deputy speakers, all from KMP parties, was present at the special plenary session convened to determine the capital’s next governor.

Basuki had been serving as the acting governor since October, when Joko, the previous Jakarta governor, was inaugurated as president.
