(Jakarta Globe) KIH Parties Behind Jokowi Want Re-election of House Leadership

12/12/2018

The parties forming the Awesome Indonesia Coalition (KIH) say only a re-election of the leadership of commissions and supporting bodies in the House of Representatives will settle their ongoing dispute with the rival Red-White Coalition (KMP).

The head of the House fraction of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Ahmad Basarah, said the party fully supports any reconciliation efforts in the House as long as they don’t constitute a violation of the law.

“The formation of internal bodies that didn’t follow the proper procedures should be canceled, as it is legally flawed,” Basarah said on Tuesday. “The process and the election of leaders of commissions and supporting bodies should be done all over again.”

‘Can’t we deliberate?’

Lawmaker Patrice Rio Capella from the National Democratic (NasDem) Party said that his coalition’s aim was to achieve harmony in the house. But that goal can only be achieved if the Red-White Coalition (KMP) is willing to join another election session.

“Doing things hand in hand will be much better. We can deliberate and come up with an agreement accepted by all parties. It’s not right if one party takes all the power,” Patrice said.

The KMP holds a majority in the House, which means it has had free rein to fill the many legislative leadership posts. Unhappy with this situation, the KIH last week held its own selection session, which resulted in the creation of shadow leadership recognized only the KIH itself.

Ruhut Sitompul, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party, which is in the KMP, suggested to solve the conflict by creating an extra leadership position for each House commission.

“Now each commission has three leaders, just add another one and give it to the Awesome Indonesia Coalition,” he said. “The current situation is embarrassing. I beg [everyone] to calm down. Can’t we deliberate to accommodate our partners to be included in the leadership of commissions and supporting bodies?”

The presiden has expressed disappointment over his five-party coalition’s bid to appoint its own speaker and deputy speaker.

“It would be much better for everyone to unite,” Joko said on Friday. “We need to maintain unity to set an example for the people.”
