(Jakarta Post) 60th Asian-African Conference: Presiden Jokowi prepares special meeting on regional issues
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said Indonesia scheduled a special meeting on regional issues among heads of state and heads of government during the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Asian-African Conference.
The meeting, according to Jokowi, would respond to the development of the attacks by the Saudi Arabian government on Yemen and the latest situation in Syria.
“[We will also discuss conflict issues] in our own region, such as the South China Sea, for example,” Jokowi said on the sidelines of his visit to Bandung, West Java, Wednesday, to check on the preparations for the commemoration.
Jokowi, however, had not yet elaborated in detail on whether the special meeting would involve all heads of state from the first conference in 1955 or just some particular countries.
He said talks on international issues were necessary and important. Regional problems in Asian and African countries, he said, needed special attention.
“We want global balance and need global justice and that is what we will voice in the meeting,” Jokowi said.
Also in Jokowi’s entourage was Presidential Chief of Staff Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Puan Maharani, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno LP Marsudi, State Secretary Pratikno and Tourism Minister Arief Yahya.
They were accompanied by Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil and West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan while in the city.
Among the places they visited were Husein Sastranegara International Airport and Savoy Homann Hotel where all the participating heads of state would stay before departing for Merdeka Building to join the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Asian-African Conference.
Jokowi also checked preparations underway at the Merdeka Building, the main venue of the event, where the 1955 Asian-African Conference was held.
“I think in general it is 95 percent ready,” said Jokowi before leaving the building to check on other locations.
During the commemoration of the Asian-African Conference, the local airport will be closed to the public on two days, from 4 p.m. on April 23 until 9 p.m. on April 24.
The general manager of the airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II, Yayan Hendrayani, said that during both days there would be no commercial flights at the airport as it would be fully used to serve the state’s guests.
Yayan said all the flight companies serving flights to and from Bandung had been informed about the planned closure of the airport, which normally serves 100 flights every day.
