(Jakarta Post) Bali Nine, Attorney General Prasetyo denies pressure Australia

12/12/2018

Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo has denied that the executions of 10 death-row drug convicts have been postponed due to pressure from neighboring Australia.

“We have already received their criticism and responded. However, it is impossible to cancel the executions altogether,” Prasetyo said on Wednesday.

Unlike the first six convicts executed this year for drug-related offences, the execution date for 10 death-row drug convicts has not been set even though nine of them were transferred last week to Nusakambangan prison island south of Cilacap, Central Java.

Some have speculated that the executions have been postponed due to international and home pressure.

Prasetyo stated that the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) was still waiting for the results of the judicial case reviews for Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso of the Philippines and Frenchman Serge Arezki Atlaoui, who had applied for a second case review.

Earlier, the government said that it would reject any legal attempts from convicts once they had submitted clemency requests to President Joko Widodo.

“We will have to wait for the results. However, the executions will still occur because of the drug crisis we are currently facing,” Prasetyo said.
