(Jakarta Post) Golkar to resolve leadership dispute next week

12/12/2018

The Golkar Party congress will settle the party’s leadership dispute next week, after congregating at the party headquarters in Slipi, West Jakarta on Wednesday.

Golkar, which was established in 1966 as the party vehicle for former president Soeharto’s 33-year authoritarian regime, split after senior figures divided over Aburizal Bakrie’s leadership and the party staged rival national congresses.

Agung Laksono and his group had wanted the congress to be held soon after the July 9, 2014 presidential election to replace Aburizal, whom they held responsible for the party's poor showing in the legislative and presidential elections.

Meanwhile, Aburizal and his faction held his congress in Bali, which Agung deemed as having been engineered to reelect Aburizal.

Aburizal won reelection in the Bali congress, while Agung was elected as Golkar chairman in a later congress in Ancol, North Jakarta, in December 2014.

“We will settle it next week, as we feel it is the best time to do so,” party congress leader Muladi said at the party’s meeting on Wednesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said the congress would analyze all evidence and facts that were presented to them, and from there they would make their judgment in the case.

The congress, he added, also wanted all conflicting parties within Golkar to prepare their evidence for presentation.

Responding to the set date, Agung asked the party congress to quickly make a decision, hopefully by this week, to resolve the matter once and for all.

But, party secretary Idrus Marham of the Aburizal camp insisted that the congress would need more time to settle the case.
