(JakGlobe) Ade Komarudin-Head of Golkar Faction: Golkar Criticizes Decision to Halt 2013 Curriculum

12/12/2018

The recent government decision to halt the implementation of the 2013 curriculum is insufficiently thought through and makes life difficult for teachers in the regions, a senior Golkar Party politician said on Saturday.

Ade Komarudin, head of the Golkar faction at the House of Representatives, spoke at a discussion on the pillars of Indonesian nationalism at a high school in Bekasi, West Java.

“There seems to be the idea that when you change the minister, you change the curriculum. But have some mercy on the education professionals and the difficulties they face in doing their jobs,” Ade said.

The state has spent a lot of money designing and implementing the new curriculum, so it would be better to fix anything wrong with it, instead of doing away with it altogether, added Ade, who is also a deputy chairman of the Golkar Party.

Education Minister Anies Baswedan earlier this month instructed the suspension of the 2013 curriculum, pending an overhaul of the content. The curriculum has drawn much criticism as it eliminates sciences, English and social studies for elementary schools, replacing the subjects with additional hours for Indonesian language, national ideology and religious studies.

Education academics and experts have argued that this would be detrimental to Indonesian students, making them less competitive on an international level. Anies said 6,326 schools across the country have adopted the curriculum since 2013, while others have only been following it for one semester. Schools that have already implemented the controversial system are encouraged to continue the program, while those who are still new to it are allowed to revert back to their previous methodology.
