(Jakpost) Govt has decided not to get involved, stays neutral in Golkar Rift

12/12/2018

The government has decided not to get involved in the Golkar Party’s ongoing leadership dispute in a move to avoid political intervention, asking the leaders of the country’s second-largest political party to settle the problem through internal mechanisms.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly said the ministry’s assessment of documents submitted last week by the two Golkar leadership factions had found that the party’s two national congresses, which were recently held separately by each faction were both legal.

“After studying all aspects, including legal, factual and related paperwork, we have concluded that there are disputes [within Golkar], in which the ministry is unable to intervene,” the minister said.

“With a heavy heart, we cannot make any decision on how [the disputes are settled]. It is Golkar’s internal [leadership] that must resolve the disputes,” he went on.

Golkar, the largest political party in the opposition Red-and-White Coalition, has been struggling with internal conflicts since a breakaway faction of the party appointed former deputy chairman Agung Laksono as its own version of party leader in a national congress last week.

Agung, who has pledged to lead Golkar across to the ruling coalition, has successfully gathered support from fellow senior Golkar politicians who strongly criticized the iron-fist leadership of chairman Aburizal Bakrie, who secured reelection in the party national congress that was held earlier in Bali.

On Oct. 8, both factions submitted documents detailing the party's leadership changes at their respective congress.

The 2011 Law on Political Parties stipulates that the government has seven days to legalize the membership of a party’s national executive after submission.
