(Tempo Editorial) Remembering Munir

12/12/2018

The late Human Rights Activist Munir Said Thalib’s reason to leave for Netherlands was for his eldest son, Soultan Alif Allende. Although he left for education purpose, he had planned to get his family to Dutch. As for Alif, Munir had wanted to medicate his son’s autism.

Munir’s wife Suciwati told Tempo that when Munir left for Dutch 10 years ago on September 6, 2004, Munir made a promise that he would pick up Suci and their two children, Alif and Diva Suukyi, on December that same year. A twist of fate ended the promise in cold, as Munir was assassinated on board in the flight.

Pollycarpus Budihari Priyanto, one among many alleged suspects, was sentenced 14 years of imprisonment. Having spent two thirds of his jailtime, Pollycarpus walked out of prison on November. Nevertheless, the case is far from solvency, leaving Suci alone with her two children in Malang – rephrasing Munir’s promise for a December in Netherlands.
