(Tempo English) Fuel Subsidy to Be Allocated to Basic Infrastructure

12/12/2018

Finance Minister Bambang Soemantro Brodjonegoro said Tuesday that he could not reveal the distribution of funds taken from the decreased fuel subsidy, but would ensure the majority of the money would be allocated to infrastructure development.

Bambang revealed that the money, which sourced from the State Budget, would be used to build basic infrastructure, such as irrigation systems, ports and roads.

Bambang said the government would use the funds to finance priority projects—based on their urgency—as opposed to spending it on short-term projects.

Bambang added that the government was currently focusing on increasing state revenue from taxes and dividends.

Earlier, the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) crafted a five-year development plan that encompassed dozens of new airports, harbors, roads and land access connecting Indonesian islands. The plan was estimated to cost more than Rp5 trillion (US$417 Billion) per five years.
