[Tempo English] Hasyim Muzadi (PBNU): Religion Column Scrapping on KTP Will Trigger Problems
K.H. Hasyim Muzadi, a renowned religious leader from the country’s largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama, said the removal of the religion column on the national ID cards (KTP) could become a political mess for the Jokowi-Kalla administration.
“Many will protest and it will become a burden on the government,” Hasyim said on Monday, November 10, 2014.
Hasyim suggested the religion column on KTP not be removed except asked for by the bearer.
“The government should not omit the religious identity on KTP. This is a delicate issue and it will trigger problems,” the kyai(Muslim cleric) who supported the Jokowi-Kalla ticket in the July 9 presidential election said.
“If there are those who do not want to use the religion column, they can officially ask that the column be left blank. But the government should not remove the [citizen’s] religious identity,” he added.
Controversies shrouding the scrapping of the religion column on KTP have continued to escalate. Those in favor of the removal said the column was better left blank so as to accommodate citizens observing religions and religious beliefs other than those recognized by the state. Another opinion, meanwhile, said religious identity should be included on KTP although the religions mentioned are not yet acknowledged by the government.
Some have also suggested that those embracing religions recognized by the government should state their religions on their KTPs, while followers of non-recognized religions or religious beliefs can leave the column blank.
The government presently acknowledges six religions in the nation: Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Confucianism.
