(Tempo English) Ical Hopes No New Parties -Separation After National Congress [Nov.30]
Chairman of the Functional Group (Golongan Karya/Golkar) Party Aburizal "Ical" Bakrie stated his concern relted to new emerging parties as the result of the upcoming Golkar National Congress (Nov.30, 2014) to appoint the party's new chairman.
Ical claimed that Golkar cadres are not entirely mature in terms of accepting defeat. He stated his concern that new parties will start to emerge after the Assembly, similar to the condition during the post-reformation era in 1998 when two new parties emerged after Golkar held their National Assembly.
He added that in 2004, unsatisfied Golkar cadres have establish the Great National Movement Party (Gerindra) and the People's Conscience Party (Hanura). Meanwhile in 2009, the National Democratic Party emerged after Surya Paloh fails to secure the Golkar chairman position.
Therefore, Ical said that the upcoming Assembly should serve as a consolidation, providing a fair competition among the party's cadres. As Golkar chairman, Ical promised that the upcoming Assembly will be in accordance to rules and regulations. "Thus, there will be no more new parties. Instead, [the Assembly] will help to strengthen Golkar," he said.
