(Tempo) Golkar Dispute Threatens Prabowo's/Red-White Coaliton
Researcher from the Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI) Syamsuddin Hari, said that the internal dispute within the Functional Group Party (Golkar) will determine the future of Prabowo Subianto's coalition. "When [Aburizal 'Ical' Bakrie] is ousted, the new chairman can shift the party's support to Joko Widodo," he said.
Moreover, he said that the Ical's domination in Golkar is highly apparent, such as when Prabowo coalition was trying to gain supports in some regions. "If Ical is out of the picture, the future of the coalition will be at stake," he said.
Syamsuddin added that Ical needs to realize that the conflict is another evidence of his failure in Golkar, following the national election fiasco. "Ical should not step up in this year's chairman election, in order to avoid oligarchy in Golkar administration," he said.
Syamsuddin also asked Ical to let go of Golkar and the coalition's fate to the hands of future leaders. If Ical insists on continuing the case, it is possible that the party can end up just as the the United Development Party (PPP). "We can have a number of charges on court," he said.
