(Tempo) Indonesia wants new law against ISIS Supporters

12/12/2018

Noor Huda Ismail, terrorism observer from Prasasti Perdamaian Foundation, said Indonesia has a weak law to prosecute its citizens who join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The statement came after the arrest of six alleged ISIS members at Soekarno Hatta Airport on Saturday.

The first reason is those who join ISIS have not been proven to directly take collective actions with ISIS because what they do does not directly threaten Indonesia’s sovereignty. ISIS concentrates its movement in Middle East.

The only one that is strong enough to prosecute them is how ISIS propaganda is connected to the massacre they commit. Huda said ISIS is different than terrorism nowadays.

Those who join ISIS are mostly lured by the Islamic caliphate. ISIS has no revered figures like other Islamic separatist movements that rely on a central figure. “Most of those who join ISIS aim to realize the utopian Islamic state,” he said.

He added that ISIS supporters in Indonesia considered ISIS different from terrorism because ISIS has territory, logistics and state governance.
