(Tempo) Masinton: Jokowi will not jump ship

12/12/2018

Masinton Pasaribu, a politician from the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) believes that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo would not join Prabowo-led coalition following the polemic of Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan nomination as the National Police Chief candidate.

“The speculation wouldn’t go that far. I believe he [Jokowi] wouldn’t do that [join Prabowo’s coalition,” Masinton said during a discussion on Saturday, February 7, 2015, in Jakarta.

Masinton, who is a member of the legal affairs commission at the House of Representatives, also believes that Jokowi would not create a new party. According to Masinton, the polemic has sparked a speculation that Jokowi is under PDIP’s pressure.

“There is no such pressure [on Jokowi],” he added.

Earlier in January 2015, Jokowi announced Budi Gunawan, former Megawati Soekarnoputri’s aide, as the sole National Police Chief candidate. Several days after the announcement, the Corruption Eradication Commission named Budi Gunawan as a suspect in a graft case. Despite the suspect naming, the House’s commission for legal affairs approved Budi as the National Police Chief candidate.

Amid the polemic, Jokowi met Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party chairman Prabowo Subianto in Bogor. They discussed several issues, including Budi Gunawan’s legal status.
