(Tempo) : Yunarto Wijaya: Grey Parties Threatens Election Regulation/Perppu Pilkada
Yunarto Wijaya, Executive Director of Charta Politica, said that the number of House of Representatives members supporting the Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) on Regional Head Elections has exceeded the minimum limit. However, Yunarto warned that the effort to pass the Perppu might be tackled by "grey" parties, such as the Democratic Party.
"Technically, the Perppu will be passed. The decision in the Democratic Party's hands," Yunarto told Tempo on Wednesday, December 10, 2014.
Yunarto asserted that support from the Democratic Party must be well-maintained, because the party might potentially call off its support to pass the Perppu. The possibility was reflected with the party walked out of the vote during the House’s meeting over regional election bill draft in September.
Earlier, parties under the Red-and-White Coalition, such as the Functional Group Party (Golkar) and the National Mandate Party (PAN) disfavored the Perppu. Recently, those parties, along with the Democratic Party, declared their supports for the Perppu.
Last night, Golkar Party chairman Aburizal Bakrie declared his support for the Perppu on his Twitter account. According to Ical, indirect elections are in line with the fourth principle of the Pancasila (Five Principals). However, Golkar decided to support the Perppu due to massive demands from the people who called for direct elections.
